Canon Information

Ghosts are the restless spirits of the dead[1][2]. The emotions and trauma of their deaths have ensnared their souls on the Ethereal Plane, unable to pass on to their next lives.[3][4] However, many ghosts can manifest on the Material Plane (or in Ravenloft, the Demiplane of Dread.) While manifesting in the material world, the ghost usually exists in an incorporeal state, while simultaneously existing in a corporeal state when interacting with other ethereal creatures and objects.[5] Some rare exceptional ghosts may have the strength of will to manifest full corporeal bodies, manifest a semicorporeal state with some characteristics of both corporeal and incorporeal forms, or even lead a mutable existence able to shift back and forth at will.[6]

Classification and Power Magnitude

Dr. van Richten developed six ways of classifying ghosts: power magnitude, physical consistency, physical appearance, origins, anchors, and triggers[7] Of these, a ghost's general level of power is determined by its magnitude[8] (also referred to as rank). Like ethereal resonance, a ghost's magnitude depends upon the level, significance, and duration the emotions the ghost experienced at its death, with the weakest ghosts (magnitude/rank 1) feeling relatively the least amounts of emotion and the strongest ghosts (magnitude/rank 5) feeling the greatest amounts of emotion.[9][3][4] Unlike a vampire or some other types of undead, a ghost's power become fixed with the transition to undeath. A ghost does not become more powerful through aging or other later events[10][3][4], barring highly unusual circumstances such as the intercession of the Dark Powers.[3][4] Moreover, most ghosts cannot further advance in character classes due to lack of opportunities to gain experience and fixations on the events related to their death. A ghost darklord is a notable potential exception to this rule.[3][4]

Encountering ghosts

Ghosts may be encountered in any domain.[11] In particular, ghosts can be encountered in Avonleigh,[12], Barovia[13], Borca[14][15][16] (and previously Dorvinia[17]), Darkon[18], Falkovnia[19], Forlorn[20][21], Ghastria[22], Hazlan[23], Kartakass[24], Keening[25], Nova Vaasa[26], Richemulot[27], Sithicus[28], Staunton Bluffs[29], Verbrek[30][31]. Prior to its dissolution, ghosts could be encountered in Daglan.[32] In the Shadow Rift, ghosts can be encountered in the Black Marsh as part of the saugh.[33]

As undead, ghosts can be encountered in Har'Akir[34][35], Mordent[36][37], Sanguinia[38], and Valachan[39][40].

Miseria is a magnet for all manner of ghosts.[41] Tragathos also has more than its fair share of ghosts, all seemingly coming from the ghost town of Tragos and all in various stages of pain.[42]

Descriptive Text

"As we rode from your home at Heather House to Barrow Cross, where we would turn south for the road to Valachan, we passed five or six people on the road; as is my habit I saluted each by raising my hat and greeting them with a few words, and all but one surly old fellow replied in kind. George likewise greeted some, but ignored others.

At length George asked me what in the Mists I was up to, raising my hat and speaking at random. When I told him I was simply being polite to his neighbors and urged him to do likewise, he paled and was quiet for some time, then told me he had only seen two of them. It was thus I learned that my recent illness had given me a strange gift indeed; I saw the restless dead just as I did the living.

In Mordent especially this proved very useful, but sometimes extremely confusing!"
