An NPC from the fan-made module Castle Falkenstein (Module), Lannel was the Hazlani half-elf witch that taught Colonel Hellmann the secrets of dark magic in return for his hand in marriage and taking her out of Hazlan. But he ultimately betrayed her, subjecting her to torture and eventually murder in order to get the dark secrets he wanted. Now she lingers on as an undead spirit.[1]

Background

Lannel's mother was an elven priestess of Hala, to which Lannel inherited the secrets and abilities of spellcasting. Yet Lannel became a destitute orphan and she found the poverty intolerable after hearing bardic tales of exotic faraway lands and great riches. Lannel's suffering caused her to turn her back on Hala and her church, instead calling to other darker powers for power and security. She wished for some well-dressed and dashing foreigner to spirit her away to one of those far-off lands she heard so much about. Lannel believed Hellmann was the person she prayed for and solicited dark knowledge for marriage and escape, not knowing she would reach a far more horrible end. Her would-be savior put her on the rack and interrogated her for all the secrets he could wring out of her. As she died, she threw a curse upon him, saying that they would one day be together again.[1]

Now Lannel's ghost has followed Hellmann and began haunting the forest around Castle Falkenstein (Location). She intends to wreak dire vengeance upon her former spouse.

In Castle Falkenstein

Lannel's ghost appears to the player characters near the cavalry camp, where she acts eccentric and flighty. If asked about Castle Falkenstein, she tells them some things about Hellmann's past and what he does with his victims. She also makes a prophecy that serves as a hint on how to defeat him. Lannel remains evasive about her own past.[2] If things go right, Lannel and the ghosts of Hellmann's other victims may overwhelm him and take him to a horrible end.[3]
