Madonna Scanzi[1] was the wife of Leo Scanzi. She acted with Romeo Giacamo Galli in the play Romeo and Juliet where they both immersed themselves into their roles of Juliet and Romeo. Her husband, mistaking their acting for actual love, poisoned Romeo midway through the play. He died in her arms and traumatizing her. Leo's subsequent death at the hands of Galli (now returned as a vampire) drove Madonna mad. However, she lived to a ripe old age until she died of the plague.

Following Madonna's death, her ghost rose again in a delusional state, believing herself to be Juliet in need of rejoining Romeo. Possessing a blacksmith, she had a sword forged to house her spirit, a sword appropriately named Juliet. By possessing more people, she eventually ensured the sword fell into Galli's hands. However, Galli never believed her claims to her identity, whether from inside the sword or from possessed women. Thus she has more or less given up on communicating with him and has become trapped within the sword.
