A mage is an arcane spellcaster. It is a term for describing both sorcerers and wizards as the distinction between them is probably unmade by, and indeed is probably unknown to, most laymen. Indeed the rare arcane spellcaster who publicly advertises his or her services is more likely to identify himself or herself as a mage rather than as a sorcerer or a wizard: the advertisement is less obscure and reveals less about his or her strengths and weaknesses.
