A criminal is an individual who has been found guilty of breaking the law of a state. Hence, individuals engaged in criminal activity are not criminals so long as they remain unconvicted. Individuals may be convicted in person or in absentia. They remain criminals until pardoned. They may be held in the custody of the state either indefinitely or for eventual release. Equally, they may be outlaws, having escaped from imprisonment or having evaded being imprisoned.
Also appearing within the category of criminal are categories describing individuals engaged in the commission of crimes. For example: arson, desertion, piracy, thief, and murder.
