In I, Strahd, The Memoirs of a Vampire
The below events represent Strahd's in character recollection as recorded in his own diary. As such, they may represent his own biases and spin.
Burgomaster Lazlo Ulrich was the burgomaster of Berez as of 400 BC. According to Strahd's description, he was a greedy and selfish miser that let his manor fall into shabby conditions in order to save his money. In 400 BC, Burgomaster Lazlo sold a number of old spellbooks to Strahd (the latter going by the alias Lord Vasili van Holtz).[1]
Burgomaster Lazlo had a single very elderly servant named "Willy", or at least that is what the old servant was called by Lazlo's adopted daughter Marina. At least according to Strahd, Lazlo seemed to treat both with less than kindness. Lazlo overworked the former and treated the latter quite callously.[2] "Papa Lazlo", as Marina referred to him, had one concrete transgression against Marina. Prior to his demise (see below, Burgomaster Lazlo had planned to get Brother Grigor to undo Marina's adoption and instead give a license of marriage - to Lazlo himself.[3]
During Strahd's visit, he met a young woman named Marina, Lazlo's adopted daughter. Strahd discovered that Marina was somehow a reincarnation of Tatyana.[4] Strahd began to woo her and transform her into a vampire, but his efforts were discovered by Brother Grigor. [5] Made aware of this, Burgomaster Lazlo staked Marina before she could fully transform. He then confronted Strahd and, seemingly overcome by horror and disgust for what the vampire had done to Marina, attempted to do the same to him. However, Strahd murdered Lazlo instead.[6]
In Curse of Strahd
Burgomaster Ulrich is described in the background for the ruins of Berez. The details here roughly match some of the events described in Strahd's account above. As related in the version of Barovia for CoS, was the adoptive father of Marina. Strahd saw Tatyana in Marina and began to turn her into his ]]vampiric bride]]. However, Lazlo and Grigore killed her before the transformation was complete. In revenge, Strahd killed them both (no mention of sending Grigor to the Shrine of the White Sun in Krezk) and then flooded all of Berez with the nearby river. Today, Ulrich exists as a ghost, bound to the Ulrich Mansion by the will of Strahd. His alignment is Neutral Good, somewhat unexpected given his behavior in the novel, though either Strahd's description could've been fabricated, Burgomaster Ulrich could have have had a change of heart since he lived, or the circumstances in the Curse of STrahd Continuity might be different enough to have the details of Marin's life and death be signficantly different.[7]
