Now a wight[1] , Laszlo Vaduva was in life a Barovian mercenary and trapper. After being killed by his lycanthrope wife Alina, he was later raised as one of the undead by Glovia Falinescu. Laszlo retrieved Tatyana's powder box for Glovia, but went on a rampage in Orașnou when he suspected her of betraying him.

History

Laszlo was a rugged trapper and furrier living in the environs of Orașnou in Barovia. After a brief but intense courtship, He married Alina Vaduva, even taking on her surname.Alina was secretly cursed with lycanthropy, something she divulged to Laszlo, though he did not care. Although Alina felt questionable about it, Laszlo and Alina found a community in Orasnou, providing much-needed furs to the local shops.[2]

What Alina did not tell Laszlo was that it was that her entire bloodline was cursed to become werewolves, meaning that their son would become one too.[3] Shortly prior to their child's birth, Alina finally divulged this truth to Laszlo. In reaction to this revelation, Laszlo became filled with violent wrath and attacked her, trying to tear the unborn child from her womb.[4] The stress of the situation triggered a lycanthropic transformation in Alina[5], and she lashed out in self defense[6], ultimately killing Laszlo. Injured and panicked, she left the child with some villagers in Orașnou before fleeing into the wilderness.[7] Concern for her whereabouts and the discovery of Laszlo's corpse ultimately led some adventurers to find her in the forests, leaving her exact fate unknown.[8]

Whatever destiny befell Alina, Laszlo's fate was not to end here. His corpse was found by Glovia Falinescu and reanimated into a wight. Glovia proposed a deal to the newly undead Laszlo: if he would find Tatyana's powder box for her, she would bring Laszlo and Alina back together for eternity as the living dead. Laszlo accepted and began his plans for finding this object.[9]

To facilitate his search, Laszlo used his wolfskin cap, a variant hat of disguise, to assume a new identity as a tradesman named Arik Lavus. At the same time, rumors began to spread about a mysterious artifact popping up somewhere in town. Laszlo took advantage of these rumors, enticing transient fortune-seekers to the exterior of Orașnou and murdering them. He sold their possessions to Fillar Esven, a local dealer of curiosities, to foster a connection with Fillar if and when the powder box appeared there.[10] Laszlo's efforts paid off, and he was eventually able to purchase Tatyana's powder box.[11]

Laszlo's activities did not go unnoticed, as the townspeople spoke about the newcomers going missing.[12] A group of adventurers rooted out "Arik" as the cause. A mob wielding pitchfork and torch gathered around the old Vaduva Trading Post intent on destroying him. Any death afflicted upon him proved to be short-lasting, for if he did not escape outright, the Dark Powers reanimated him soon after.[13]

Laszlo ultimately began to suspect a betrayal from Glovia.[14] To exact his revenge, he rallied the undead to attack Orașnou en masse, determined to inflict his revenge upon both the villagers seeking his doom and Glovia herself. However, the undead were routed and destroyed with the assistance of several adventurers. Despite the property damage and possible loss of life among the villagers, Glovia actually took advantage of the situation. She kidnapped her young assistant Sorina and took her back to the Falinescu Manor. There, Glovia hoped to place the soul of her dead daughter inside of Soria's body. However, adventurers intervened, and Glovia was slain.[15]
