Hilda Kreutzer (also known as Hilda Von Karlsveld) is something of a former necromancer[1] (or perhaps, more accurately, a spiritualist mage[2]) from Martira Bay. She lives with her husband Friedrich Kreutzer. Though they have been adventurers, they prefer to avoid it and instead keep to writing and dispensing knowledge.[2]

Many decades ago, Hilda was the tutor for the daughters of Herr Gimpfel.[3] Hilda met both her future mentor in matters necromantic, Herman Von Schreck, and her future husband, Friedrich Kreutzer, while lurking in the Graymoor Cemetery in the immediate vicinity of Il Aluk, where she (ill-advisedly) sought inspiration to write her own stories.[2]

Hilda and Friedrich were hired by Dr. Victor Mordenheim to restore Elise Mordenheim. Hilda was kidnapped by Adam but rescued by the combined efforts of Dr. Mordenheim, Friedrich, and the monster hunter Ivan Dragonov. After Dragonov and Adam had seemingly destroyed each other, Mordenheim attempted to force the Kreutzers to aid him in reviving Elise by transplanting her soul into the body of Ilisa Zsolty, a Vistani woman. Ilisa's own consciousness would be lost in the transfer, so Hilda forcefully declined Victor Mordenheim's offer. Adam was an unlikely savior in helping them to escape his creator's wrath.[2]

In their escape attempt, the Kreuzters became lost in the Mists after Hilda tried to cast a spell to help their flight. They wound up traveling through space and time into the modern timeline of Ravenloft, where they bought a cottage just on the exterior of Il Aluk. Fortunately, they were away at the time of when Il Aluk became Necropolis.[4]

Hilda enjoys reading adventure-filled romance books. Her favorite writer is Mrs. Felicia Henry.[5] Hilda has something of a psychic talent, enabling her to read minds, or at least get empathic impressions.[6] She also seems to have a certain amount of sympathetic clairvoyance, as she used her psychic power to find Ilisa as a match for Elise in soul transference.[7] However, her psychic talent can be unreliable, as it seems to leave her when she is under extreme distress.[6]
