The bone golem is a magical animated construct and as such lacks the dread golem template. It is a mindless automaton that obeys in the most straightforward way possible the orders of its maker, drawing no conclusions and taking no initiative. The creature will not resort spontaneously to special actions such as tripping or disarming, but it may either be given a specific instruction to make one such attack or may be directed as necessary by a maker who is immediately at hand. When issuing instructions to the animate thing, its maker is wise to err on the side of simplicity.[1]

The creature is constructed out of the bones of undead skeleton, has the shape of one, and is readily mistaken for this simple undead.[2] When inactive, the only hint it offers of being something other than mere bones is the retention of a skeletal form. A bone golem is powerful, with a screaming attack that can paralyze and even outright slay a foe.[3] The creature's employment where skeletons would be expected, or in their very midst, makes for an unpleasant surprise. The bone golem is the invention of Azalin while he was still in Barovia, prior to his darklordship.[4] One is known to exist near the Maw of Arawn in Forlorn.

Bone golems can be encountered in Darkon[5] and Necropolis[6]. In Scholar of Decay, Aurek Nuikin encountered a bone golem in the old lair of a Necromancer in the sewers underneath Pont-a-Museau.

Construction[7]

A bone golem is constructed from the bone of fallen skeletal undead. Only 5% of any one skeleton can be used in the creation of the golem, so a creature incorporate bones collected from 20 or more undead. The successful maker of a bone golem is an arcane spellcaster of at least the 18th level. He or she pours 25,000 gp (or its equivalent) into bringing his or her idea to "life". Of this total, 100 gp are spent fashioning the thing's body, which takes one month and a successful Heal or Knowledge (anatomy) check (DC 12). The ultimate animation of the thing requires 1,400 XP from the caster and the casting of the following spells: animate dead, symbol (fear), binding, and wish.

Descriptive Text

"Yasmine tossed her torch down into the new chamber, then we all entered after it.

"Unlike the hallways and other rooms of the king's tomb, bones and broken skulls littered the floor: it was impossible to set foot in that dessicated abatttoir without stepping on the brittle debris.

"When I bent over to retrieve the torch, a bony claw seized my hand. Then a chorus of shrill voices burst from the skulls of the room...

""If you all wish to see Mei Fu Wang, you first must give a tithe to the Duke of Skulls!"''

"And with that, a great, dusty bulwark of giggling, chittering skulls and sharpened bones pulled itself free of its hiding place."''
