The golem is a magically animated construct and as such lacks the dread golem template. It is a mindless automaton that obeys in the most straightforward way possible the orders of its maker, drawing no conclusions and taking no initiative. The creature will not resort spontaneously to special actions such as tripping or disarming, but it may either be given a specific instruction to make one such attack or may be directed as necessary by a maker who is immediatley at hand. When issuing instructions to the animate thing, its maker is wise to error on the side of simplicity. Depending upon the type of golem, it may or may not be lent a humanoid shape and it may or may not stick out like a sore thumb even when inactive.

The construction of a golem animated by magic requires ample gold (or its equivalent), the fashioning of its body, the Craft Construct feat, animating spells, and an investment of XP. The maker must personally, at a minimum, supplies the XP and possesses the feat. The prerequisites of the feat establish that the maker must be a least somewhat accomplished spellcaster.

Learning about golems in game is a matter of arcane Lore and as a skill and game rule is Knowledge (arcana). Ravenloft Lore and Knowledge (Ravenloft) concern dread golems and may provide inaccurate information about mere golems.
