Utpal Datta claims to be an ascetic disciple of the wise beast Sharabha. He has recently become Harriet Hickling's guru.[1]
In truth, Utpal Datta is a sorcerer/monk, and most of his supposed ascetic abilities are sorcerous in nature. Through this deception, he hopes to assert his will over Hickling, assuming control over her and the Rajian branch of the Colonial Merchant Company. He does not realize that she is actually a more accomplished monk than he is.[1]
