Perdition Hill

Perdition Hill the name of a hill in Malosia and the allegedly inescapable prison in Malosia within and beneath it. (A fortress of a name long forgotten stands atop of the hill, but it is the horrific prison that meant anything to anybody inclined to think about it. The prison is primarily for heretics and witches. Run by the Redbreasts of the Empyrean Church, it can be characterized most succinctly as a "man-made hell".[1] The environment of the underground prison exists as a cruel and chronic haze that cooks the body with a humid heat and the mind with an aura of hopelessness. The halls stink of human filth, sweat, and smoke. Only artificial illumination lights the lower levels, where the inmates do not get to see the light of day.[2]

The prisoners must perform hard labor or other tedious and harsh work in order to receive food to eat. Not that the food may be sufficiently nourishing, for one may be given a pathetic gruel. Everyone in the prison has had at least one visit to Perdition Hill's torture chambers, where the Truth Seekers try to tease out confessions or other information. Technically members of the Empyrean Church's clergy and therefore subject to the taboo against spilling blood, the Truth Seekers have developed numerous ways of torture that do not involve causing any (external) bleeding.[3]

The only known escapes of the prison are Sir Diederic de Wyndt, Violca Hanza, and Leonera Talliers, who did the unthinkable: escape by going down rather than up. They faced ghosts, vermin-filled waste dumps, and traversed through the long forgotten ancient tunnels beneath the dungeons occupied by guard and prisoner.[4]
