Mother Lorinda

Mother Lorinda is the darklord of the Shadowfell domain of Tepest[1]. Though she masks herself as a benevolent deity and motherly figure for the people of Viktal, Lorinda is actually a green hag of great age. Though she is able to bless the land of Vitkal and ward away the fey that plague the rest of the domain, Lorinda demands regular humanoid sacrifice. These sacrifices enable her to let her misbegotten constructs, her "children" to live a few weeks longer before rotting and falling apart. This alludes to perhaps her greatest torment- all of her children can live for at most a few weeks before the foul magic that creates them unravels, leaving only rotten remains of bramble and body parts behind[2].

History

Fairies delivered Lorinda and her two sisters Laveeda and Leticia as babies to their mother as presents. However, the rest of the Mindefisk family- their father and brothers- abused them, especially after their mother's death[3]. To enrich themselves in preparation of escaping their situation, the three sisters robbed and murdered passing travelers before ultimately eating them in their stew pot. The father and brothers were similarly killed after discovering the actions of the sisters. The Mists then whisked away the sisters to a strange new land of Tepest. Here the murderous sisters transformed into hags[2].

After learning magic from the fey, Lorinda and her sisters used said magic to exploit and feed upon the local mortals for many successive generations. During that time, the trio earned reputations as sages and workers of both ominous wonders and horrors. Consulted by those hoping for nature's bounty or even for children, the hags used their powers for weal and woe[2].

After some time, Lorinda decided she wanted to fabricate progeny for herself, though her sisters refused to help. After cobbling together an abomination of plant and animal parts with dark magic, Lorinda colluded with it to trap her sisters within the Old Cauldron and steal their magic. Yet soon after Lorinda's first child rotted away to nothing, a torment that continued with all her subsequently created children[2], save perhaps for the one she abandoned in the failed village of Kellee[3].

Lorinda has since then established herself as the center figure of a naturalistic folk religion within the town of Viktal. A similar attempt was made in Kellee, though that attempt only ended in disaster with the town becoming abandoned save for the aforementioned misbegotten of Lorinda's creation[3].

Mother's Blessings and Demands

"Mother", as she is simply referred to as by the Viktal townsfolk, blesses the town with bountiful soil and good weather using her darklord control over Tepest[2]. Her domination ensures peace among the townspeople- at least at the surface- in Viktal[1]. Tepest's fey avoid Viktal and its people due to Queen Maeve's and King Loht's fears of a mystery weapon held underneath Gwydion's Claw[3]. Fertility rate among Mother Lorinda's followers is low, so they must often petition her for hexblood children[2].

In return, Mother Lorinda calls for the people's devotion, including watching out for those lacking sufficient faith. Moreover, she demands a seasonal human sacrifice during the festival of the Tithe. Her will is carried out by an special group of devotees called Mother's Minders, whom poke out their left eye to show their devotion. Lorinda can see through any such emptied eye socket[2].
