The darklord of Monadhan is Arantor.[4] Monadhan is one of the Shadowfell domains detailed in the 4th Edition era of online Dragon Magazine (#378). As such, it is a domain existing with the Shadowfell and, save perhaps for the inclusion of Kas, not directly connected to the canon of the Demiplane of Dread as it existed in 2nd Edition and 3rd Edition.
Introduction
Monadhan, the Traitor's Hold, is an exotic jungle realm primarily of traitors and betrayers, as these are the primary type of people the mists drawn in from elsewhere. As such, Monadhan has no centralized government, instead existing in anarchy.[3]
Monadhan Outpost is the echo of a location from Arantor's home world, the unnamed Points of Light implied setting, formerly in Bael Turath. On the Material Plane, it was an isolated jungle hold destroyed by Arantor in his first step on the path of corruption. The outpost is now long destroyed and overgrown on the Material Plane, but its echo on in the Shadowfell still exists.[5]
Biology
The flora and fauna of this lush rainforest realm can be be just as treacherous as the people whom inhabit it. The beasts here are exaggeratedly craftier, bigger, and more lethal than in natural realms. Yet the forest gives life as it also gives death, for the denizens here rely primarily on it for natural resources. Still, they eschew from plumbing its depths.[6]
Geography
Thick, tropical rainforests dominate Monadhan. Fog shrouds the realm, blurring the light but letting the full heat of the sun pierce the dense forest canopy. The Tangledeep swamp forms as a southwestern border to the jungle valley in the central part of the realm, whereas the looming Warden Cliffs pick up where the Tangledeep leaves off before giving way to yet more jungle.[7]
Fed by Ternun Falls, the Ternun River winds through the domain, its flow dividing east and west to the north of Shantytown and the Monadhan Outpost. The western flow spills over into the Pit whereas the eastern flow terminates in Blackfish Lake.[8]
Population Distribution
Most of the people in this domain are loners whom trust few, eking out meager existences of self-sustenance in the forest and water nearest in proximity to Shantytown. Within Shantytown, there are some 3,000 souls. The town's power balance is unstable, for it exists in a state of perpetual gang war.[9]
Elsewhere, undead lurk in the out-of-the-way Hall of the Betrayer. These undead are the minions of perhaps the most infamous of the realm's traitors, Kas the Betrayer.[3]
Towns
- Shantytown (pop. 3000)[10]
Authority
The only form of "formal" social organization is that of the various warring gangs that keep the power balance of Shantytown forever in flux. Those whom (for however temporarily) dominate the Monadhan Outpost in theory dominates the town, though the dissolute nature of Monadhan society makes it implausible to achieve. Currently rule of the Outpost is ruled by Pelnur Gatesfist.[11]
Arantor, the realm's darklord, hardly pays attention to his domain, as he dwells in his caverns below Shantytown puzzling over ways to escape, by death if necessary.[12] He is served by a band of death giants led by Bahlik Gur, though their only roles are to guard the Caverns and make sure nobody escapes the domain.[13]
