Death giants are a race of giants that once held a great and mighty empire. However as with all things, the time for the empire's doom eventually arrived. The ancestors of the modern say death giants made a pact with an unknown entity, surrendering their souls and all of their descendants in exchange for unholy power. The pact was ill-advised, and to this day, the souls of the death giants are bound for destruction in the Negative Energy Plane upon their deaths. Still, so long as a death giant lives, it can claim the souls of mortally wounded or recently deceased souls to aid it in combat. These souls constantly circle around the giant, giving it bonuses to certain rolls and immunity (or rather, healing from) negative energy damage. In addition, upon the death giant's command, these "guardian souls" may produce a frightening keen.^[1]

Of the many dread domains, the death giants have been specifically linked to the Shadowfell domain of Monadhan. Its darklord, Arantorm is served by a band of these death giants led by Bahlik Gur, though their only roles are to guard Arantor's Caverns and make sure nobody escapes the domain.^[2]
