Efraim Graben is known as the founder and first patriarch of the Graben Family. He is recognized as the first one in modern times to settle Graben Island, and it is the noble Graben Family line that continues to serve as the default owners of unclaimed land on the island.[1] Through his efforts, the Grabens became well known for their mercantile skill in jewelry.

Efraim Graben is stil revered and respected to his day. However, according to one folktale, Graben was no one of special status but rather a fraud, a forger, and a thief who fabricated the Graben name from whole cloth.[2]. As it happens, this story is largely true (as far as false history goes). In 580 BC, the wealthy jewel thief arrived upon the island and built Graben Manor. In 610 BC, the family now known as the Grabens adopted the island name for their own as they settled the land full-time.[3]

To his credit (at least according to how he is remembered), Efraim is remembered for Efraim's pact with some Anatal refugees (forebears of the current Grabenites). The pact provided the latter with hospitality, land, and sustenance in return for recognition of the Graben clan's seniority over the island and default ownership of any unclaimed land. Efraim also made his island more secure from exterior threats by recruiting the refugees in protecting it.[1]

Efraim's non-existent ghost is sometimes thought by scholars to be the darklord of Graben Island.[4]
