Graben Island came into existence in the Sea of Nebligtode as part of the domain of Nebligtode in 635 BC. It is the largest island in the domain and was relocated with the domain to the Nocturnal Sea and joined to the Core in 750 BC.
Off the south shore of the Graben Island are the Schlammholme Islets which are separated from the island only by the highest of fall and spring tides. The islets are gathered in clusters, of four, four and five, and reach out into the sea like three extended claws.
Climate & Terrain
Graben Island is a cold and cruel land, with temperatures varying from dropping twenty degrees below zero in the dead of winter up to (but never more than) seventy degrees Fahrenheit when summer is at its hottest. Precipitation is frequent, even including volatile storms, and mist is usually hanging in the air by the time the evening arrives. Snowfall can pile up to several feet.[2]
Many parts of Graben Island are not well-suited to habitation by humanity. Stony beaches and only occasionally scrub-covered bluffs dominate the northwestern portion of the island, and the southern portion is largely weak and mushy marshes and swamps. The central parts of the island are a bit more hospitable, featuring grass and shrub-covered prairies that are populated by a variety of small animals. The rain-carved ravines hold pine forests.[2]
Fauna
The central prairies are populated by a variety of small animals. The bitter cold of Graben Island precludes many creatures that would normally dwell in the swamps on the southern portion of the island, but some varieties of birds, snakes, and toads as well as otters and beavers can be found there. A variety of birds also inhabit the pine forests, and so do a variety of mammals such as bears, cougars, rabbits, squirrels, and wolves. Herdsmen allow sheep and goats to graze on the grasses of the island's northern edge.[2]
