Dwimmer is a publication that is exclusive to the domain of Madego. The magazine was founded in 741 BC in Madego's Darkon province, in Il Aluk, with funding from the Church of Lupta and several of the Core provinces' demilords.
Subject Matter
Dwimmer is a magazine that appears irregularly, serving to spread articles by Voodan, Bocoru, Shamans and especially Dwimmerlaerer. Its main subject matter is the Loa or Spirits of the domain. Dwimmer's roving reporters travel the vast domain, collecting stories, rumours and myths in search of Spirits who have not yet become common knowledge. Once a particular Spirit and the ceremonies that please or appease it have been properly recorded, that information is shared through Dwimmer. Likewise, the magazine announces the creation of new Spirits, openings for apprentices to Dwimmerlaerer, and job openings from communities in need of a Shaman for specific work or as resident spiritual guide. Once enough articles have been collected to fill an issue, the magazine goes to print.
To a much lesser extent, Dwimmer collects and shares news about arcane magic, occult magic and psionics. The creation of new spells and powers, items for sale, exam results, practitioners seeking gainful employment, apprentices seeking masters and masters seeking apprentices, it all winds up in the latter third of a typical publication[1].
Typical issues of Dwimmer are crammed full, cover to cover, and illustrations as few in number as possible. Typically, it is a work of passion; every contributor submits articles out of genuine love for their subject, and because they want to share that passion as well as their discoveries with the world.
Funding
Dwimmer receives regular funding from the Darkon Church of Lupta and King Azalin, and local outlets as well as offices for the roving reporters tend to receive sponsoring from the local Demilords. Every province benefits from the effective communication of spiritual and magical lore, as well as the job listings and records of items for sale.
Dangers
- Dwimmer may be predominantly a magazine about the Spirits, but it was made a possibility due to the patronage of the Church of Lupta. A ritual blessing by the Church is always printed over the front page's title. Any entity that feels hostile towards the Church or the goddess is likely to be hostile to the magazine and its reporters.
- Although no one ever remembers this, Wudr is one of Dwimmer's roving reporters. His articles are heavily biased towards assuring Chi-Folken supremacy, and he tends to report only on the most malicious Spirits he can find.
- G'Henna province has forbidden the sale of Dwimmer within its borders due to a liturgical disagreement over the identity of Lupta. The local Church of Zhakata claims that Lupta was the Provider, and refuses to welcome the magazine so long as it bears Lupta's blessing. In 749 BC, G'Henna province founded its own Dwimmer magazine; a publication much like its 'parent', but focused solely on the Spirits, with no section for arcanists, occultists and psion, and a ritual blessing from the Church of Zhakata on the cover. Typically, this second Dwimmer is focused exclusively on the spirits that exist within G'Henna province.
- Not everyone is happy about the proliferation of spirits and magic in Madego. Dwimmer is a well-funded institution with good security, but the roving reporters are typically much more vulnerable to pressure and violence.
- Some of the contributors (Such as Count Strahd von Zarovich) are genuine in their sharing of lore, but Evil in nature. The Spirits they call upon and spell-rituals they share tend towards the dark side. More than one reader has let their guidance lead them into corruption.
