A Bastellus, also known as a Dream Stalker, is an incorporeal undead that can invade dreams. They are rarely seen as they only show themselves in the presence of a sleeping person, and their cowardly nature.[1]
The Bastellus is drawn to creative, energetic, or extroverted personalities. They "feed" off this person's dreams, to their detriment. Like a vampire, this can result in the creation of another bastellus but due to the new undead spirit's need to "feast" on dreams before the sunrise after its burial, this is rare.[1]
The bastellus can be found in the following domains: Barovia[2], Dementlieu[3], Falkovnia[4]. Hazlan[5], Mordent[6], and Nova Vaasa[7]
Ecology
The Bastellus is a unique type of undead as it has been argued that they are a "natural" byproduct to a person's hopes and dreams. While this is conjecture, the value of the "essence" of this creature is not. It has been noted that the Bastellus' essence can amplify the effects of a magical illusion.[1] They can be controlled by an Amulet of Bastellus Control.[8]
Other Notes
It's stated in the game materials that the Bastellus resides in its own pocket universe during daylight hours. The pocket universe has been theorized to be a planar conjunction with the Negative Energy Plane and the Demiplane of Dread coming together. [1] The pocket universe might possibly be instead classified as an Oubliette.

I noted with very great interest an increase in the number and severity of nightmares experienced by the patients in block C in the last six weeks. I therefore spent last night in that hallway with two orderlies, to see if some external condition might be influencing this group. You can imagine my surprise as I observed that the patient in room 117, at the north end of the hall, was first to awake, screaming; no sooner had I collected his impressions than the patient in 118 awoke in a similar condition. Each and every patient from 117 to 132 (at the south end of C block) experienced a nightmare in sequence during the course of the night. Further investigation into the phenomenon is demanded.
