A summoner is a spellcaster who brings one or more fiends into the Land of Mists. Summoners, unless they are both very powerful and very good judges of their own limts, rarely are long for this life. Both Azalin and Strahd have, for example, put themselves in exceptionally dangerous positions through their dabbling as summoners.
