Kalidnay, run by Thaok-an, the templar of a comatose dragon-king.

Yes, it's first presented in the Forbidden Lore Box, and one of the coolest domains I had the pleasure to read about so far... :)

Heroes of Horror was of limited use in a gothic campaign. But then, it wasn't meant to be. A Castle Ravenloft might be, it'll be designed for different things.

We'll see though...

Strangely, in Forbidden Lore Thakok-An is the templar of a dragon-QUEEN. They gender-switched him (and his queen) in Domains of Dread and I was never really sure why, though I'm sure someone here can enlighten me.

But would you consider to be the judge in this epic battle of the century - I mean, what against a relaxed Drinnik sitting in the arena, eating some of Des' mom's best Fajitas and watching how Merowech's mean mechwarrior beats the very essence of the mists out of the alhoon? :)

Yeah, I noticed the same... My copy of Domains of Dread arrived just today, and I instantly noticed it.

I am thinking of using Kalidnay in a totally different setting... Actually, in a desert of my beloved Wilderlands... :)

I'd asked about that myself at one point. Evidently, the dragon-monarch in question wasn't entirely a Ravenloft-product invention, but had been lifted from the historical backstory of Material Plane Kalidnay: an empty ruin, in the Dark Sun setting's present era. Thakok-An's old boss had been male on Athas, but the Kargat had overlooked that little detail in their initial boxed-set description of RL-Kalidnay. When the Athas-fans and designers caught on, they must've screamed bloody murder, as the DoD book (not opting to go the "Hazlik" route  ) fixed the cross-world discrepancy by swapping which NPC -- sleeping tyrant or darklord/templar -- was male and which was female.

I haven't taken part in an OOC war for ... 3 years? Let's see if I remember the forms.

Who stands with me against Daisy? It is a fight for honor, goodness and for the future of our children! Rally to my flag to save our children from the horrors of Desdichado.

PS. We will also save our children from honor and goodness too! We can kill them somewhere in the way.

Not to stay on topic or anything... I'm always a little bit leery whenever WotC decides to "republish" something which has such a grassroots following. I guess it's the whole thing about commercializing something which is alive. Yes, it's ALIVE :banshee: In a manner of speaking...

You're right, 160 pp. is quite large for an adventure...maybe a campaign-setting accessory?

YES!
Save the kind and friendly brain-chewing evil monster with plans for world domination from the mean and nasty knight of truth and honour...

From what I have understood over the years, there is a very limited set of possible page count for books of this format. The number of pages is predetermined by marketing according to cost / return relationships. One of the jobs of the editor, then, would be to cut the written material until it fits the predefined pagecount.
I should note that everything in this post should be preceded by a bit "I Suppose".
But from past history of RL books, they were either (the numbers may be wrong) always 64, or 92 or 1... pages. So, a book can almost be classified by its number of pages: short -> adventure, medium -> accessory, long -> campaign setting..... just a personal theory. Those involved in the business can of course tell you better.

I shold clarify. What i ment was, could Castle Ravenloft be the Ravenloft version of the PGTE? It would make sence as it is called a supliment, is the same size, and is the only explination i can think of for a WOTC hardback book on ravenloft .

The other explanation is... money. Hardpacks cost more and should contain more info. Unless someone asks and gets an answer about this book, we can only guess.
