The Whispering Beast

In Sithicus, the Whispering Beast is known as something of a frightening legend[1], whispering maddening words to Oathbreakers, that is who swear oaths in public but are then publicly revealed and denounced as having broken said oaths.[2] (Examples of such Oathbreakers include Bratu[3] and Lord Soth[4]. While not technically under "his jurisdiction", those oathbreakers who are consumed by inner guilt may hear his whispers. Such examples include Helain, for she broke her oath to love Ganelon by becoming bored with him.[2]

The Whispering Beast resided in in a special lair hidden in the Iron Hills of Sithicus with its "wards", Oathbreakers who had succumbed to madness and heard the Beast's clarion call. The Beast wore a magical necklace of severed ears that he could use to implant geases onto any of his wards[5], or alternatively, to remove their madness.

The Whispering Beast was an associate and a seeming subordinate to the White Rose. Although the Beast was quite frightful, he flinched before the wrath of the Rose, on the rare occasion she should show it.[6]

History

The origins (and true nature) of thee Whispering Beast remain obscure. Although the White Rose claimed to Ganelon that she and the Whispering Beast were agents of a justice far more ancient than either Sithicus or Soth, she also claimed to Soth they were creatures begotten by him, as is everying in Sithicus around him. The Beast himself shows the vestiges of a handsome Elf-like visage, but it has been overtaken by a physically corrupted ugliness that warps his appearance.[6]

When Ganelon traveled across Sithicus looking for his beloved Helain, he learned from the Bloody Cobbler she was held at the Lair of the whispering Beast. On the way there, Ganelon ran into Inza Magdova Kulchevich and was captured and then tortured by her for the location to the Whispering Beast's lair. However, Ganelon upheld his oath to the Bloody Cobbler. He lasted long enough for the Whispering Beast to come to his aid and rescue him.[7]

Once Ganelon awoke in the lair, the Beast and the White Rose made a proposition to Ganelon. They would free Helain of her madness if Ganelon took the Beast's wards and used them to collect large amounts of red roses needed for a ritual to bring Soth to justice. To help him, the Beast gave Ganelon a severed ear from his necklace[6], which seemed to command the same influence as the Whispering Beast's necklace had.[8]

Following the delivery of the roses, the Whispering Beast removed her madness. Along with the Bloody Cobbler and the White Rose, the Whispering Beast appeared in Nedragaard Keep to interrupt the fight between Soth and Inza.[9] When Soth disappeared, so did the Whispering Beast, which was a manifestation of his son, Peradur (as was the Bloody Cobbler).[10]
