Canon Information

Also referred to as the fair folk, elves constitute members of a long-lived race of humanoids that as a whole has a strong connection with nature yet is also steeped in magical lore. They tend to have an appreciation of elegance, art, and beauty as well as knowledge, but these appreciations are tempered by reclusiveness and a general wariness to the outside world. As with other nonhumans, elves face bigotry and prejudice in many Ravenloft domains outside of Darkon and Sithicus. Therefore, elves in the Demiplane of Dread even more withdrawn from contact with nonelves than they are on worlds on the Material Plane. As they can often pass for humans, elves may nonetheless be encountered within the Demiplane more commonly than some other nonhuman races despite the elven trend towards isolation from the outside world[1][2][3].

High elves constitute the vast majority of elves found in Ravenloft[4], although wild elves represent a small minority of elves in Sithicus[5]. Although Arak was said to be plagued by drow from underground, this is (and was) a mistaken perception; the true inhabitants of Arak was an entirely unrelated race of fey more properly known as shadow fey[6]. Despite some perceptions nonelves may have of the elven people as immortal fey creatures, elves are still fully mortal (if very long-lived)[7][8]. Barovia may or may not be home to a population of dusk elves, although the details are contradictory.[9][10]

Elven Homelands in the Demiplane of Dread

Although it has been said that Ravenloft has no native elves[11], elves have two primary homelands in the Demiplane of Dread: Darkon (primarily in the Mistlands towns of Neblus, Nevuchar Springs], and Sidnar) and Sithicus (where elves uniquely make up the majority of the population)[4]. The elven cultures of these two lands are seemingly distinct and separate[12][13] Drow may be found in the underground regions of Darkon[14][15] (primarily in the Mountains of Misery and possibly the Mistlands[16]), and wild elves of a stone age cultural level can be found in the wilder regions of Sithicus[5].

Outside of Darkon and Sithicus, elves make up a small but notable minority in Falkovnia (1% of the population)[17], Keening (1%)[18], Necropolis (5%)[19], and Fallaya Basin (<1%). However, in Falkovnia, elves will either be hidden from view or enslaved, whereas in Keening or Necropolis elves will only be encountered as undead. In Fallaya Basin the small tribe of elves live freely in the deep swamp where they rarely encounter non-adventurers aside from the grung.

Description

Elves tend toward slim builds with angular and fine features. One of their most notable features is their elongated, pointed ears[4][7][8]. Though taller than some other humanoid races, elves are often smaller than humans. The delicate build of elves lends itself towards dexterity] and grace more than physical hardiness[4]. Despite a lesser trend toward physical hardiness than humans and some other humanoids, the elves may show a superior resiliency against mental trauma and madness[20].

The elven appreciation for the fine and elegant is reflected by the clothing and accessories they wear. Elves on the whole prefer clothing made from light, delicate material (such as silks or satin) and pastel in color[4]. (There are some seasonal variations in color for Darkonian elves, whereas Sithican elves prefer more muted colors[7][8]). Elven tastes are also reflected in the gear adventurers use, with elven adventurers most often using fine blades such as the rapier and lighter armors[7][8]. For the most part, elves disdain firearms for their noise and messiness[20],.

Outcast Rating

Under Third Edition rules, elves have a base OR of 3[7][8].

Elven Vampires[21][22][23]

Despite their rarity in Ravenloft, there is a vampiric strain specific to the elven race known simply as the elven vampire. This is not to say that all elves that become vampires become this specific vampire strain, but that all members of the elven vampire strain are elves. Jander Sunstar is an example of an elf that is a vampire but not of the elven vampire strain.

Despite being uniquely attuned to activity at day rather than at night time, elven vampires live wretched lives. Unlike most vmapires, elven vampires are highly disfigured by a transformation of distorted features and exaggerated looks of torment. As such, elven vampires live as outcasts. Elven vampires suffer the curse of the black thumb, which makes their touch wither any plants they come into contact with. This trait enrages creatures so finely attuned to nature, and elven vampires usually come to hate nature rather than loving it.
