The Kingpriest of Istar

As the unwitting cause of the Cataclysm, the Kingpriest of Istar is a figure of major importance in the history of Krynn, the Dragonlance campaign setting, and of Lord Soth. He was a fanatical zealot in the destruction of Evil (or what he saw as Evil[1] (including all arcane magic[2]), but in his hubris he became what he thought to destroy. He called up to the heavens to demand the gods of Good to grant the power to smite all the Evil in the world.][1]

Given one last chance at redemption in the form of a vision from Paladine to stop the Kingpriest, Soth began the ride to Istar but ultimately turned back to confront Isolde Denissa's apparent (though nonexistent) infidelity. In doing so, Soth permitted the Kingpriest to finish his blasphemous decree. The gods punished the Kingpriest and Istar for such gross display of pride by hurling down a flaming mountain upon the land. In so doing, the gods brought about the Cataclysm.[3]

A reflection of the Kingpriest appears in one of Soth's Memory Mirror fantasies where Soth daydreams about completing the mission he was given by Paladine.[4]
