A character from the Tapestry of Dark Souls novel, Sondra resided in Tepest but originally came from Gundarak, escaping that domain as she could to reunite with her father Ivar (of Tepest). There she would meet, fall in love with, and marry a boy named Jonathan, and in so doing, become tangled up in the plot of Morgoth to take over Tepest.

Prior to the final events of The Tapestry of Dark Souls novel, Sondra assisted Ivar in the harvest of cloudberry, mainly by baking food for the cloudberry harvesters.[1] Though Ivar practiced magic, Sondra never wished to learn, linking it to the death of her mother.[2]

History

Sondra's mother, Sara, was pregnant with Sondra when Ivar and his sister (Sondra's aunt), Dirca, fled Gundarak. With Dirca and Ivar settled in Tepest, Ivar ultimately hoped to return for Sara and Sondra and take them to Tepest after Sondra was born.[3] However, things did not work out according to plan. Ivar had left several copper coins to Sara that he had magically disguised as gold. However, Duke Gundar discovered the deception and confiscated everything she owned. As further punishment, he outlawed anyone from giving her assistance. Although other relatives presumably took care of Sondra, Sara herself was left her to die of starvation.[2] Fortunately, Sondra was able to escape to Tepest in approximately 734 BC.[4]

When out looking for her missing friend, Arlette, Sondra was ambushed by goblins. She was saved by wolves seemingly summoned by Jonathan, who took her hand and helped her escape.[5] Following Jon's arrival in Linde, Sondra and Jon became quite close as she helped him become acquainted with life in Linde. They eventually married.[6]

Jon's arrival did not bring only happiness. It exacerbated Dirca's already existing antipathy towards Sondra, with whom she now competed for Jon's affections, albeit of a completely different nature.[7] Moreover, a young man named Mishya was Jon's rival for the affection of Sondra.[8] After a fight erupted between Mishya and Jonathan, Mishya enlisted the aid of friends (Alden and Josef) to ambush Jon and beat him near to death. Mishya then ordered Alden and Josef to take Jon out into the wilds to leave him as a sacrifice for the goblins. However, with the aid of Maeve, Jon killed both of his attackers. Sondra lied to the other townspeople to conceal his involvement in their deaths.[9]

Following the release of Morgoth, Sondra was drawn into his plan to breed a group of descendants to help him take over Tepest. She would bear Jon's son and thereby Morgoth's grandson.[10] After the villagers of Linde turned against Jonathan, she briefly defended him before being captured and imprisoned. Morgoth entranced Dirca and sent her to poison the guard watching over Sondra and free her. Instead, the corruption Morgoth brought into Dirca led her to attempt a murder of Sondra. Sondra saw through the attempt and escaped. Only in the last moments before Morgoth's arrival did Dirca realize her transgression against Sondra. Dirca attempted to halt Morgoth's advance to Sondra, but he murdered Dirca and drained all her life away. Morgoth subsequently captured Sondra.[11]

Held by Morgoth, Sondra nursed Jon back to health after the latter failed to throw off his father's control. They enjoyed one final meeting before Jon went with Morgoth to the Monastery in Markovia.[12] There, Jon turned on Morgoth once again and joined with Ivar. Both sacrificed their lives to destroy the Tapestry of Dark Souls and Morgoth with it. Sondra lost both her father and husband.[13]

In the time following Morgoth's demise, Sondra held not the uplifted feelings her family and friends were so fortunate to. As the spring came, she returned to the monastery, where she encountered the spirits of Jon and his mother Leith. Once again, she was happy.[14]
