As related in the Wreck of the Albatross, Raoul[1] was an adventurer and an associate of Juno Lutuem and his band. Juding by his ability to cast fireball, Raoul was an arcane spellcaster, likely a sorcerer or wizard. After horrendous experiences inside Darkon, Raoul and the others charted a ship to leave Nevuchar Springs for the Nocturnal Sea. From the Nocturnal Sea, the ship was abducted by the Mists and taken to the Amber Wastes, likely via the Jackal's Ruse mistway. With the ship aground in sand, the adventurers set out exploring the Wastes. Annabel, Juno, and Raoul were among the survivors, though Raoul's mind seemed to have been affected by the dark knowledge he discovered in Anhktepot's Tomb, as madness and delusions of grandiosity began setting in.

Worried about his sanity, Raoul's friends suggested he retire to a mental asylum for treatment. Raoul seemed amenable, only asking that Annabel go back with him. Two months later, Juno and his other associates went back to check on Raoul, but first encountered Luthia, Raoul's wolf-hound now transformed into one of the ancient dead. The creature attacked, and it was a harrowing and disturbing experience putting Luthia to rest permanently. Juno and his compatriots worried about Annabel, fearing she had been turned into a mummy or otherwise put at peril by mad Raoul's depredations. Still, they resolved to save Annabel, at least in soul if they could not in mortal life, and to stop Raoul and suppress the knowledge that corrupted him. </ref>
