A minor character from the novel King of the Dead, Ranald Zal'honan was the older brother of Firan Zal'honan and Irik Zal'honan (Brother) as well as the son of Earl Turalitan Zal'honan. In 246 BC, Firan botched a fiend summoning that caused a chain of events leading to the death of Irik. Turalitan exiled Quantarius as punishment, even though Quantarius was not really the one responsible. After the incident as Firan was going to follow Quantarius, Ranald gloated at Firan's folly, but ultimately asked him to stay and give up his blasphemous wizardry. Firan rejected his offer.[1]

In 270 CY, Turalitan died, and Ranald inherited rule of Knurl. [2] Ranald's rule was a disastrous one, for he was a lazy and neglectful ruler. His duties were mostly left to the beleaguered Warden Rehajo. Over the years, the city fell into disorder and a number of factions struggled for dominance over it. Ranald's rampant gluttony resulted in his early death, and none of his children were living after his demise to inherit the throne. With Knurl in chaos, Warden Rehajo sent messengers for Firan to come back and inherit the throne, to which he fortunately accepted.[3]
