First introduced in Quoth the Raven Issue 28 as a character in the Chibiloft comics. Ooglie is a Darkonese Caliban who signed on with the Chibiloft Crew and has blossomed as a member of the odd adventurer band.

Origins

Ooglie was born in Darkon in 744 BC, to parents who could not wait to rid themselves of their - in their eyes - 'cursed' offspring. To their credit, they did so by dumping their baby at an orphanage, rather than one of the worse options.

Ooglie was a kind-hearted and sensitive child in spite of his appearance. He used his strength to defend himself, but did so by restraining those who tried to bully him, rather than lashing out. He did not bear grudges, and was simply saddened by the cruelties inflicted on him. His caretakers at the orphanage grudgingly recognized - and encouraged - his restraint, providing rewards in the form of lessons they might otherwise not have 'wasted' on a Caliban. In spite of this, they kicked Ooglie out on the street to fend for himself as soon as he turned twelve.

Mercenary

Ooglie made ends meet by hiring himself out, first as a day labourer and later as a mercenary. He learned the use of a rapier, having grown to admire the elegant fighting style of Dementlieuse, Borcan and Richemuloise fencers. The dimensions of his body required he use an overlarge blade. Even when he trained diligently in the fencing arts, he still received a great deal of mockery.

Ooglie tried to save up money and improve his life, but he was frequently underpaid if he received payment at all. More than once, he was fired without reason or had to flee mercenary groups that would have kept him as an attack dog, compensated only with scraps of food and beatings. For years, his only true luxury was a rapier forged especially to suit his over-large hands and too-long arms. He named the blade Lancet and has maintained it by replacing parts that wear out beyond repair.

The lonely Caliban's life turned around completely when he signed on with two human adventurers in Barovia as extra muscle during a vampire hunt. Slice and Wick were clearly surprised by his appearance, but did not make an issue out of it. Rather, they appreciated his support and let him know that they did. When time came to settle up and their employer tried to withhold Ooglie's share of the payment, Slice even grew angry on his behalf. Afterwards, Ooglie timidly asked if he might join the two Outlanders on a long-term contract - and found himself hired on with the Chibiloft Crew without hesitation. He has seen no reason to regret his choice.

Adventurer

The life of an adventurer has suited Ooglie very well. He considers his teammates to be interesting, and their unquestioning acceptance has helped him to blossom. Specifically, each of his teammates has helped further Ooglie's education, either by direct instruction or by introducing him to useful books. Experience as an adventurer and exposure to the Van Richten Guides have granted Ooglie access to the Monster Hunter Prestige Class - something that he considers one of the crowning achievements of his life. As he is a humble soul, the young Caliban has not let his achievements go to his head; he continues to study and train as much as he can, in hopes of proving useful to his teammates and making the world a better place for people to live in.

Combat

In battle, Ooglie sees himself as support, and he does his best to coordinate with others and follow battle-plans. He flanks with his teammates to bring the power of his sneak attack to bear on enemies. He uses his limited spellcasting power cautiously, knowing himself to be weaker than other spellcasters on the team. His oversized rapier and the inhuman reach of his arms are a marked asset in battle. If he has a weakness, it may be a lack of initiative; if a plan goes sideways, Ooglie looks for instructions instead of improvising.

Religion

Ooglie is a devout follower of the Darkonese sect of Ezra, and conscientiously attends the services held by his teammate Aubert as well as any churches of the goddess that will let him in. He firmly believes that dark times are coming and monsters must be defeated. Fortunately, his life's experiences have taught him monstrousness is more about character than form, and he prefers restraint over destruction.

Secret

Ooglie's dearest and most secret wish is to one day become a true Hero; righteous of heart, steadfast yet kind in his wisdom. All his efforts to better himself serve this goal. One day, he may recognize that he already is one.
