Founded upon the fire-and-brimstone, apocalyptic visions of Bastion Teodorus Raines, the branch of the Church of Ezra based in Nevuchar Springs is perhaps the most zealous (and even fanatical) branch in weeding out the Legions of the Night that supposedly prey upon the faithful of Ezra. It is also the youngest (though not necessarily the last) branch, established only in 751 BC in the wake of the Requiem. Mostly Lawful Evil in alignment, the Nevuchar Springs Zealots engage in many extremist practices to prepare for the impending Time of Unparalleled Darkness. These include religious conversion through coercion and performing torture and experiments] upon the presumed agents of the Night's Legions to discover their vulnerabilities.[1]

The faith has spread through the eastern parts of Darkon as the Eternal Order has been crumbling.[2] This expansion has not been peaceful, as the Nevuchar Spring anchorites have been feuding with the faithful of Darkon's state religion. In fact, the Nevuchar Springs anchorites displaced and replaced the Eternal Order clerics from at least two temples. These include the Last Redoubt in Nevuchar Springs and The Ward of Perdition in Maykle[3]

Bastione Raines faces some degree of faces opposition within The drift of the Nevuchar Spring sect towards darkness has caused many dissidents in the faith to label Teodorus as mad.[2] However, converts still continue to pick up. Another prophet, Bailey Lacrese, within the Mordentish Sect, has experienced visions of the corruption of the Nevuchar Springs sect leading the latter to take up arms against and wiping out the Mordentish Sect. The Mordentish have been covertly building the Blessed Army of Ezra in preparation for this great conflict.[4]

Clerics of the Nevuchar Springs sect most frequently adopt the Mist and Destruction spell-domains, though, as with the Lawful Evil alignment, these represent the most common trends and not requirements for anchorites of this sect.[5]

History

Following the Grand Conjunction of 740 BC, Teodorus Raines saw this as a sign of the immanent end times, and he wandered Darkon for the next eleven years preaching fiery prophecies of the impending doom that will fall upon the land. Raines's efforts went poorly until the Requiem. The chaos and fear it brought, plus the weakening of the Eternal Order, was the chance Raines needed. In 751 BC, Raines wrote the Fourth Book of Ezra[6][7], past the Rite of Revelation, and henceforth won recognition as the Bastion and founder of a new sect of the Ezran church. Teodorus Raines settled down in Nevuchar Springs[2], making the Last Redoubt his seat of spiritual authority after ejecting the clerics of the Eternal Order.[8] The decline of said rival faith following the Requiem has left a void of religious needs the Nevuchar Spring sect has eagerly filled.[2]

Over the following fifteen years, the Nevuchar Springs sect grew in power and number while at the same time embracing increasingly extreme and ruthless practices over time. Bailey Lacrese, one of the Mordentish clergy, experienced a vision of their Darkonian kindred wiping out all the clergy of the Mordentish sect. After a council of senior clergy deemed Lacrese's visions to be true, a secret faction within the church began assembling the Blessed Army of Ezra in preparationn for such a conflict.[4]
