Nikolas is a Vistana of the Equaar Tribe and is a leader of the Wanderers. Showing an uncanny expertise with the care and training of animals from an early age, Nikolas bore the responsibility for the care of Sabak (Magda's Hound). Nikolas has an unusually cheerful and compassionate nature, even towards giorgio such as Nabon. This has historically put him at odds with Piotr, a fellow Wanderer, but their shared past has rendered the latter highly respectful of the former.[1]

Nikolas was first briefly mentioned in Spectre of the Black Rose as one of the three surviving members of the Wanderers. He was further fleshed out in Heroes of Light.

History

Born in 732 BC[2], Nikolas is a second generation Wanderer, his parents among the earliest to join the patchwork clan formed by Magda Kulchevich ten years prior. His parents were murdered by Duke Gundar or his minions when Nikolas was very young, leaving the boy to be raised by the collective of the Wanderer adults.

Nikolas spent most of his childhood close to Inza in physical proximity but not emotional attachment. Aided by Piotr, Inza mocked and tormented Nikolas, even surreptitiously kidnapping, torturing, and killing his trained pets.

In 746 BC, Inza watched with rapture as a bigoted mob of miners at the Veidrava Salt Mines nearly beat Nikolas to death. Hoping to share a few laughs, Inza shared this information with Piotr, but he lacked the malice to take any humor in it. Piotr notified Alexi of Nikolas' location but not he came by this discovery. Inza quickly turned the situation to her advantage, telling Magda that Piotr, not her, had let the mob assault Nikolas. Bratu backed up her lie. However, Nikolaus intervened and pleaded for mercy on Nikolaus' behalf, thereby preventing his exile. From that day, Piotr was a loyal friend to Nikolaus instead of Inza.

In 752 BC, the majority of the Wanderers were killed in successive attacks planned by Inza in order to gain the protection of Lord Soth. Nikolaus was one of the four surviving Wanderers (the others being Piotr, Alexi, and Inza) to make it through the final attack of Invidian ogre mercenaries.[3] After the Hour of Screaming Shadows occurred, the Wanderers joined with Nabon, a stone giant, to confront Inza at the ruins of Nedragaard Keep. However, she jumped into the Great Chasm to escape punishment, only to unwittingly become shrouded in darkness. Though Inza had escaped the punishment of her former kin temporarily[4], she faced the punishment of the Dark Powers, becoming darklord of Sithicus.[5]
