Nightingale is the daughter of Tsien Chiang and the only Good one at that. She is the younger sister of Hate, Spite and Scream. An object of scorn to her family, Nightingale is imprisoned in The Tower of Broken Promises and mystically linked to The Bell of Lament.[1]

History

Like the rest of her family, Nightingale was born to a noble family in Kara-Tur. Named for her extraordinary singing voice, Nightingale's songs were so rapturous it endeared her to the very gods themselves. Yet Nightingale's innocent and goodly nature alienated her wicked sisters and mother, though Tsien Chiang manipulated Nightingale to fulfill evil ends more than Tsien Chiang's other daughters. Like the fathers of Tsien Chiang's other daughters, Tsien Chiang murdered Nightinggale's father.[2]

Tsien Chiang eventually constructed the Bells of Evil and Lament, one for each her daughters to hold their respective souls (and a little bit of hers). The Bells kept the daughters from growing old, but it also made them puppets to her will.[3]

Tsien Chiang enjoyed watching the would-be lovers of her daughters destroy each other and then arranging the destruction of any survivors. These atrocities brought joy to Tsien Chiang's eldest daughters, but Nightingale’s heart became heavy, and thereby her beautiful songs, with sadness. Nightengale brought her objections to her mother and sisters, but every time she was severely beaten. The gods sent foreboding warnings of Tsien Chiang's transgressions, but she heeded them not. Tsien Chiang held the gods in contempt, for she blamed them for holding the truth of four from her.[4]

The fourth time Nightengale was badly beaten, Tsien Chiang was filled with the urge to completely decimate her body. As the horrid torture commenced, fog began to enshroud Tsien Chiang's Palace of Bones. The emperor attempted to stop Tsien Chiang, but she slew him with a laugh, finally breaking her oath.[5] Tsien Chiang imprisoned the living remains of Nightengale in the Tower of Broken Promises[6] as the Mists tore I'Cath from Kara-Tur forever.

Nightingale now exists as a bisan (see the Kara-tur Monstrous Compendium Appendix, or a nymph if that source is not available) of Lawful Good alignment. Though imprisoned in the Tower of Broken Promises, Nightingale can send out a ghostly ethereal form and roam I'Cath, but this unwittingly lures travelers to their demise at the hands of her mother and sisters.[7]
