A Mist Claimer is a Mistborn duplicate of an already existing person in the Demiplane of Dread. A mist claimer comes into existence when one of two things occur^[1]:

• the person expresses an interest in performing to enact dark desire or perform another heinous deed but then then not follow through with fulfilling said interest
• in hubris, dare the Dark Powers (or whatever forces of the night the individual believes to exist) to provide the individual with a challenge.

The general existence of mist claimers is known by a few individuals with knowledge about the Mists, such as the the Weathermay-Foxgrove Twins. Why or how the Mists spawns a mist claimer is unknown, although some theorists believe it to be a version of the tenebris directly created by the Mists.^[2]

Although mist claimers ultimately seek to destroy their fleshy progenitors, Mist Claimers to ruin their original counterparts figuratively through usurping the originals' identities. A mist claimer uses the appearance and knowledge of the original individual to sully the original's reputation and alienate friends and family. The mist claimer continues to use its false guise to perpetrate evil, put the original individual danger, and even drive the the original mad before coming in to foster judgement upon the original in a physical confrontation.^[1]
Although might suggest that a person could only have one mist claimer in existence at a time, this is not true judging by the case of Artemis Petrovich. Said individual had multiple mist claimer copies all acting to ruin his reputation independently before ultimately convening together and dragging Petrovich into the Mists.^[3]

In terms of game mechanics, a mist claimer is created by adding the Mist Claimer Template to the base creature that spawned Mist Claimer. Mist Claimers have a number of unusual abilities including the ability to dimension door through mists, assume gaseous form, and making their weapons pass through armor or other protection as if said protection didn't exist. The mist creature also has the Trackless Step ability, leaving behind no tracks or other evidence of passage unless it wishes to. As a Mist Creature, the Mist Claimer also has the Mists Subtype.^[4]
