The gargolye golem is a magical animated construct and as such lacks the dread golem template. It is a mindless automaton that obeys in the most straightforward way possible the orders of its maker, drawing no conclusions and taking no initiative. The creature will not resort spontaneously to special actions such as tripping or disarming, but it may either be given a specific instruction to make one such attack or may be directed as necessary by a maker who is immediatley at hand. When issuing instructions to the animate thing, its maker is wise to error on the side of simplicity. The creature is carved of stone in the shape of a gargoyle. When inactive it offers no hint of being something other than a simple statue. It is usually employed as the guardian, or enforcer, of religious institutions. Its invention is ascribed to Vlad Drakov who does not have the necessary competences. Nor is it obvious which sufficiently high-level priest he could have commanded in such an endeavour. Perhaps one came ready-made with his realm.

A gargolye golem is carved from a single slab of granite weighing at least 2,000 pounds. The successful maker of a gargolye golem is a divine spellcaster of at least the 16th level. He or she pours 75,000 gp (or its equivalent) into bringing his or her idea to "life". Of this total, 1,000 gp are spent fashioning the thing's body, which takes two months and a successful Craft (stonemasonry) or Craft (sculpting) check (DC 17). The ultimate animation of the thing requires 1,200 XP from the caster and the casting of the following spells: holy word (or blasphemy), prayer, stone shape, and flesh to stone. An arcane spellcaster must be obliged to cast the last spell.
