Biography

Captain Hans Eckert was the brother of Wilm Eckert and the leader of a five person mercenary team. On an unknown outlander world, Hans Eckert was known as a mercenary captain who didn't ask questions as long enough coin was involved. After Captain Eckert received a blade from a wizard in some castle ruins, Eckert became a conqueror using the mystical powers of the weapon. He started with using its powers of domination to gain control over Wilm and the other mercenaries of his troop. And so Captain Eckert became a major power, feared and respected in his homeland, finding strange new abilities in the sword with each victory. Yet on the eve of a major conquest, the Mists snatched the captain and his mercenary followers, depositing them in Barovia.

Bewildered, Captain Eckert captured and interrogated some of the nearby peasants before ending their lives, leaving false evidence implicating Vistani involvement. As much as Captain Eckert tried to adapt to the strange and wicked land of Barovia, he and his dominated mercenaries were trapped with that dread land. Captain Eckert balked and chafed at having to become a mere bandit and thief. However, it seemed like Captain Eckert's fortunes might change after he manipulated a giomorgo man named Sebestyen into revealing a large shipment of silver to be stolen from the Wagner Family mines. In "repayment", Captain Eckert slew the man and enslaved his cousin, Lisl, forcing her to become his guide to Barovia.

Although Captain Eckert heard the legend of Jezra Wagner, a horrible spectral entity also known as the Ice Queen, Captain Eckert was a skeptic and refused to believe it. This proved to be his doom, as succumbed to her heat-draining power near Mount Baratok. Wilm and Lisl survived and fled, Eckert's spell broken.
