Bouki is a minor character from the Ravenloft product line novel Dance of the Dead (Novel). In universe, he is a figure of Souragnien legend in the Tale of Two-Hares, where he inevitably gets into trouble and must be rescued by his friend Longears.[1] More than a mere folk hero, Bouki is one of two rabbit loa (along with Longears). As a hero spirit to rabbits, Bouki is carnivorous (for eating predators)[2] and much larger than his normal kindred (the size of a dog of impressive size)[3]. As a loa, Bouki is capable of speedy regeneration unless he is injured enough to kill him outright.[4]

In Dance of the Dead

In Dance of the Dead, Bouki is captured by Tane and Dragoneyes and handed over to Captain Raoul Dumont, who keeps Bouki as one of his slaves aboard La Demoiselle du Musarde.[3] After the capture of Willen, Alondrin tortures Bouki to affect Willen through his sympathetic link to all nearby creatures. However, Willen does not succumb to the torture and refuses to give Alondrin information on Larissa Snowmane's whereabouts or plans for attack on La Demoiselle.[5]

During Bouki's period of captivity, he becomes friends with Bushtail, a Richemuloise fox loa. As Larissa Snowmane lays siege to Le Demoiselle with the help of the swamp creatures, Bouki helps to thwart the magical songs protecting the craft by thumping his paws and singing, a revelation that causes Willen to exclaim he sometimes thinks Bouki may be more intelligent than Longears.[6] Bouki, Bushtail, and the rest of the imprisoned magical creatures are ultimately rescued by Larissa and Gelaar Redtree.[7]

Trivia

Bouki is quite fond of making gumbo, though Longhears usually eats most of it.[8]
