Wayston is an isolated village surrounded by the Mists of Ravenloft and the Blackbriars Wood. Said woods seems to have a malign intelligence about it, for it has been claiming the lives of Wayston's citizens over the past week since the theft of the Mourning Lantern from the Wayshrine. Few seldom openly die by violence but instead merely go missing in the night[2].
History[1]
Wayston was built upon land once held sacred by an ancient order of druids. The builders of the town demolished a circle of standing stones. Though the foundation of the town was created to emulate the standing stones and placate the divine, the spirits of the forest nonetheless took offense at the disturbance. The spirits thus turned their wrath upon Wayston, being placated only through the sacrifice of Saint Lucia in order to create the Mourning Lantern.
The Lantern hung from the Wayshrine for two centuries before its recent theft, warding off the evil of the forest. After its recent theft, the woods swallowed the path out of town, trapping all within. A week has passed, with more and more people vanishing each night as they are claimed by the blights serving the Gulthias tree responsible for Blackbriar Forest's corruption.
