Thorn Hollow was a medieval city on the Material Plane that was, so legends say, was the object of a constant power struggle between three barons. Their fighting brought constant strife and civil war to the city. A powerful witch became angry and thus cursed the barons, imprisoning each one of the barons souls in one of the Shards of Light.
The Shards lingered on in in this state for millennia before they were stolen by necromancer and immortal wannabe Malachi Nately and stored within his laboratory just outside of Thorn Hallow. The Shards contested Malachai's will for dominance enough that he botched the conjuration of a gelugon, which broke free and ultimately destroyed Malachai along with his laboratory. The Dark Powers seized the lab and surrounding environs and brought them into the Mists, making the Shards of Light the co-darklords of the realm[1].
