The Mask of Sorrowful Beauty[1] is a porcelain mask and powerful magic item dread crafted by the sculptor Pierre Spandeaux to win the affection of Anne-Marie Renier, though it ultimately only resulted in tragedy for them both.

The Mask changes physical attractiveness (as per a hat of disguise) to one that has superhuman levels of attractiveness. It also allows the wearer to detect lies at will. However, the Mask also bears a powerful curse. The longer it is worn, the more paranoia it induces into its wearer, ultimately turning it into a full-blown madness complete with an alignment change to Chaotic Evil. However, wearing the mask is also addictive, and it tears flesh every time it is removed.

Another effect of wearing the Mask is its antipathy against rats and rat-like beings, particularly wererats. The wearer of the Mask bears an innate loathing to all rats and can't stand close exposure to them. A wererat who assumes its rat or hybrid forms near the wearer sees the wearer assume a fear-inducing visage, sometimes horrifying enough to strike wererats dead.
