Pierre Spandeaux[1] is the creator of the Mask of Sorrowful Beauty.

Pierre was a native of Ste. Ronges As a young boy, Pierre was assaulted by rats. Pierre's father sacrificing his life to save the boy. Pierre emerged relatively intact, but he was hideously scarred from the experience, both mentally and psychologically. Raised by his mother Michelle Spandeaux, Pierre grew up sheltered from the realities of his social ostracism due to his infirmities by donning a mask of porcelain. He became skilled as a sculptor and soon his talents earned him acclaim. Mistaken feelings led him to fall in love with Anne-Marie Renier, one of the (in)famous Renier Family.

Despite his mother's stern admonishment of seeking a romantic relationship with her, Pierre asked Anne-Marie to be his lover. She laughed and rejected him, telling him the truth of how everybody knew he was disfigured. In a haste brought on by obsession, Pierre fled to his home and dread crafted a beautiful mask that he could wear and make her (and everybody else) love him. His mask did work in winning Anne-Marie's love. However, he eventually fell to the Mask's curse of induced paranoia and rejected her in turn. Bitter with a heart full of vengeance, she assumed wererat form and stalked him with the intent to kill. However, she was surprised (as was Pierre) to see Pierre's visage change to a horrible monster, one that frightened Anne-Marie to death. Pierre himself was horrified, and he ran into the night.

Jacqueline Renier sent her wererats after both Michelle and Pierre for revenge. Michelle was easily struck down, and Pierre is thought to have been murdered as well. if that is the case, then the Mask may have passed through several hands since then.
