The Flayed Rider

In the history of Graben Island, when the Anatal people invaded Graben Island, the Black Chapel monks called the Flayed Rider, a horrible monster that the Anatal legends depict as one of the Restless Dead. In truth, it is a nuckalavee, a horrible aberration. It ran amok, murdering and flaying the Anatals until their clerics got hold of it. It was geased to avoid the sea waters, bound, and stuck in a remote corner of the island in stasis. When the Mists captured Graben Island, the Dark Powers freed the Flayed Rider from its binding stasis, but reinstated the geas as an everlasting curse. The Flayed Rider remains trapped between the rivers of Graben Island and its shores, bound by its loathing of pure water and its geas against salt water. When at rest, it dozes in the the Aassumpf’s stagnant lakes.[1]

Unlike the living, the Flayed Rider has a limited tolerance for the company of the undead, at least in as far as it can stand to have them as slaves and victims to torture for extended periods of time. Igil Wotanshand is its rival for control over the Strangled on Graben Island.[2]
