Madeline is a patient of the Hospital for the Alienated. She was committed there by Jacqueline Renier because Madeline's lustful ways deemed her an odious nuisance in Jacqueline's eyes. Jacqueline uses writing as an outlet for the sexual indulgence she cannot fulfill in real life. Philibert Antuns has attempted to rid her of her excess by throwing her into solitary confinement, but this has only had the opposite effect. Because of this, he has given up on her.[1]
