Kalaban is a character from the 4th Edition novel Mark of Nerath. He is a death knight that formerly served as commander of Magroth's Imperial Guard. Five centuries ago, he struck down his brother Krondor after the latter assassinated Magroth. As with the rest of the people in Darani, Kalaban was transformed into one of the undead. Darani became a Shadowfell domain with Magroth as its darklord.
When Magroth struck a deal with Orcus for his freedom five centuries later, Magroth took Kalaban with him. When Erak, Krondor brough back as a revenant, struck down Magroth once again, the Mists dragged Magroth back to Darani, leaving Kalaban behind. Kalaban challenged Erak to a duel, but Erak declined and disappeared into the shadows. Kalaban decided he was done with involvement in grand schemes and Magroth's service and went his own way.
Personality
Quite unusually for a death knight, Kalaban felt unnerved several times by Magroth's behavior. He also showed a strange reluctance to kill when he didn't need to, such as a wizard he was tasked with stealing something from and even a carrion crawler.
