The Gustav Baronial Family assumed leadership after Baron Gustav the Elder settled down after years of conflict with his brother Klaus. Realizing Clyde in the end had no claims for the barony himself, Baron Gustav assumed the mantle. He wed a woman named Ingrid, and they had a son Gustav the Younger. Things were happy for a decade and a half until by Gustav the Elder was killed by a random snakebite in the garden. This freak of misfortune would start a cascade of events that would unravel the Gustav dynasty.^[1]

Because Gustav the Younger didn't have the will at the time to assume leadership of the country, Klaus stepped in to fill that role. To keep the lineage intact, Klaus married Ingrid. Unbeknownst to the living, the spirit of Baron Gustav the Elder lived on in the form of a malevolent (and jealous) ghost that misunderstood this turn of events as an act of betrayal. Eventually both Gustav the Young and the Elder met, and the Elder fabricated a lie about how his brother Klaus had poisoned him. The weak-minded Gustav the Younger immediately fell for the ruse and began plotting revenge against Klaus (but not Ingrid)at the Elder's insistence. The Elder wanted Ingrid to live because, After Klaus was slain, the Elder planned on taking control of the Younger's body and having her back again.^[2]

Gustav the Younger withdrew to plot the murder of Klaus under a facade of madness and mourning. His apparent mental deterioration and removal from public life caused his would-be lover Elaine to become concerned. She confronted him and pleaded with him to return to his senses, but he vehemently rejected her. As Elaine's father moved in to intercede in the argument, Gustav the Younger struck him down in a rage.^[2]

Gustav the Younger was to be taken away to a place where his apparent psychological damage could be healed out of the public eye. With the double blow of his removal and the death of her father, Elaine committed suicide thereafter. Having crept covertly back into the kingdom, Gustav the Younger put the blame on Ingrid and Klaus, violently attacking them despite Klaus' insistence that was not the case. Klaus was struck dead. Ingrid was mortally wounded but survived the attack. (Her survival was never known to the Younger, as she was locked away and hidden in an insane asylum.^[3]

After this double betrayal and homicide, Gustav the Elder manifested his evil presence, angrily mocking the Younger and revealing his true plans to the boy. As they came to violent blows with each other, Gustavstan entered Ravenloft. Since then, they have been cursed to be unable to directly fight with each other or to effectively command their normal forces against each other.^[4]
