Estrangia is a city that is the setting of but a single short story, Tales of Ravenloft: Undefiled. The city lies in a valley, where, at least according to one long-winded merchant, the population keeps increasing despite the depredations of the vampire known as Crave. Crave feeds weekly, bringing despair and fear to the people. The Temple of White Hope, under the leadership of Friar Whelm, remains the only source of light and hope in Estrangia, or so say the faithful. Friar Whelm acts as both spiritual counselor and spiritual guide, visiting the homes of those whose relatives fall to Crave, even the homes of nonbelievers.[2]
In reality, things are not as they seem in Estrangia. Friar Whelm is not a caring priest, rather he has an arrangement with Crave. Whelm is even a parasitic undead creaturea a much as Crave is- a possibly unique variety of undead called a coraltan.[3] Provided it is not an unplaced location within some other unknown domain, Estrangia is likely an Island of Terror. Many fans have commonly attributed Friar Whelm as its darklord.
