Contrary to the stereotype of the lich, not all liches as wizard or sorcerers. Some are clerics or other divine spellcasters, referred to by Van Richten as clerical or priestly liches. Clerical liches tend to be rarer than arcane spellcaster liches due to the life of a priest less often suggesting a self-absorption often needed to motivate becoming a lich. The dissolution of previous morality and indeed of personality liches tend to undergo makes it all but unheard of for Good aligned deities to sponsor lichdom in the Land of Mists. According to Van Richten, this dissolution also means Evil aligned deities will rarely sponsor lichdom, for liches are powerful beings that may come to represent threats to the power of the gods' cults. Instead, Van Richten suggests enigmatic Neutral aligned gods are more likely to sponsor their clerics to become liches for whatever unknowable reasons. According to Van Richten, clerical liches usually serve deities of knowledge, death, and/or disease[1].

Aside from casting spells from different spell lists and class abilities, clerical liches have largely similar special abilities of their arcane kindred, and they depend upon specially created lich's phylactery as all liches do. The general process of becoming a lich is largely similar, but relies upon different spells and magic rituals[1].
