Also known as "kin,"[1][2] changelings are construct[2] servitors created by the Arak races from humanoid soul-shadows placed in new flesh bodies.[1][2] To create a changeling, a shadow fey must remove a mortal's shadow (which also holds the person's soul)[1][2]. The living body left behind becomes a mindless[2] husk, going through the motions of a person's old routines but otherwise having no personality or drive[1][2], leading them to be called elfshot or shadowreft.[1][3] Meanwhile, the new changeling construct becomes obsessively devoted to a certain trade or craft, ignoring all other things.[1][2] Changelings are immortal but without emotion or personality. Most changelings will not even act in their own self-defense.[1][2] The powriekin, muryankin, sithkin, and tegkin are notable exceptions.
The skillset of a changeling is determined by which of the Breeds of the Arak the creator belongs to.[1][2] Becoming a changeling is usually reserved for particularly adept individuals in their corresponding fields of question.
Changelings look like their living counterparts, save for a visual characteristic implying an association with their creator's breed.[2]
Creating Changelings
Obtaining Consent
Removing the shadow first requires obtaining the mortal's consent as determined by the mortal's consumption of faerie food[1][2]. This definition of "consent" is dubious by mortal standards, as there is no requirement for mortals to fully understand or even know of the consequences of eating the faerie food[1][2].
Removal of the Shadow and Delivery to the Shadow Rift
Once consent (such that it is) has been given, the creation of the changeling is a multistep process requiring the proper Tools of Transcendence.[4] Summarizing and abridging the ritual, the process requires the lighting of a Shading Candle to keep the mortal asleep, shearing off the shadow with a Silver Sickle, and delivering the shadow to the Shadow Rift in a Shadow Sack before the Candle runs its course or is snuffed out.
Advancement
Changelings advance by character class. Most breeds of changelings only take levels in the expert class, with a few exceptions.[5]
Languages
Changelings known and speak the same languages as their mortal predecessors.[1][2]
Encountering Changelings
Changelings dwell within the Shadow Rift, where they make up about a quarter of the population.[6] They are most concentrated in the town of Anvolee, where they make up the vast majority of the popuation.[7] They can also be encountered in Tepest[8].
