List of titles for Clerics?

Post by Gonzoron of the FoS »

Anyone have a good list of priestly titles? There's a tiny one in the 2e DMG, but I remember seeing a longer one somewhere. I'm looking for something to call my priestess of Evening Glory that's more distinctive than "priestess" or "mother". So far the best I've found is "Celebrant", though that's used by the Church of the Divinity of Mankind, so I'd like something with a similar feel, but different.

(Evening Glory is a True Neutral goddess of death and love. she promises neverending love through undeath. See Libris Mortis.)

Well the best I can do is start to qoute titles of religious orders.....

Some i've heard in fantasy is for example....

Destraint (from a book series I'm reading uses this... not a traditional title)
Arch (enter title here like bishop)
Lord (enter title here)
Reverend Mother (From the Reverend Mothers in Dune <-- if you have not read shame on you!!!)
Saint
Palatine?
Segan?
Deacon?
Apostle
Elder (insert title)
Matriarch (<.< that one might be good)
(Not that i think this matches but) Yogi
Cardinal
Abbot (in this case Abbess)

A suggestion from a friend is you could look up titles in a different language that way no one knows what it is. (or possibly doesn't know) Some of the one's above are from different religions around the world... those are some of the ones i thought MIGHT be interesting.

Here are a few I have used myself...

Thane

Archon

Ecclestriarch

For some reason this is all I can come up with off the top of my head right now... :? Perhaps more will come to me later... :)

Indeed it was pretty hard to think of titles. XD

I like Archon but that's because of fable

hmm... looking for something a little less ... heirarchical? less formal? Not like the leader of a big cathedral. Just the leader of a small cult. The cult shouldn't see her as "above us", but "one of us" just maybe a bit more connected to their god's higher plan. An informal spiritual leader, not someone ordained by the "Pope"

So are you looking things for like "Blessed" (insert here) or..... a word like Seraphim?

a word you would use in place of "Hey you! Come here, you need to see this." :)

So, like "Father" or "Rabbi" or "Priestess"

Or like you might introduce someone as: "Bob, this is ____ Sue"

Shepherd/ess? Pastor/ess? Minister? Minster (note the missing "i")? Cara (Latin for "beloved") or Amanta (somewhat mangled Latin for "lover")?

Hmm... getting closer. Shepherdess is on the right track. I already have the cult members calling themselves "beloveds" so Cara is tempting too.

what does everyone think of predicant, harbinger, or prophetess?

She's sort of a guide for the rest of the cult... an unholy matchmaker, sort of. Any good word for someone who bonds people together in marriage? (not Offiiciant, I'm using that one for something else)

In Dragonlance, clerics are addressed as Revered Son/Daughter of (god's name).

most often from what i can tell the leaders of a sect or the like refer to their leaders by the thing that appeals to them most about the god/dess they represent. i.e. 'Your Grace', Shepard, etc. but from the sounds you're looking for something more akin to 'Counselor'.

having just read the 'Evening Glory' entry perhaps you may just need a synonym of some aspect and create your own.
Not every Angel alights the sky with feathery wings of Glory,
Nor every Demon with cloven hoof hunts unwary Quarry.
No, but evil exists in this world and in the hearts of us all,
For let us not forget even the greatest of Angels fell.

I don't supposed the "Undying" Mary fits? xD Since love persists after death in this cult.

Eternal Order (theme of "light in the darkness"):

Guards, warriors, templars - other men-at-arms without priestly powers: Sentinels.

Lower-echelon priests: Lightbearers.

Higher-echelon priests: Beacons.
