ewancummins wrote:Jon-

You have been walking for what seems like a long time.
The night is dark, cold, and windy.

Now, up ahead, you can make out a light, as of a torch or lantern. Drawing near, you see Denys's house, and about a dozen armed men standing in the front garden. Two men carry burning lanterns on long poles. Five or six horses are tied up along the garden fence, standing in the edge of the street.

The men don't give any indication of having spotted you, just yet. You are currently about twenty or thirty yards away from the house.
cardinal_malik: Jonathan sneaks over the wall, using the shadows and the guards blindside for cover.
cardinal_malik: hide 21
cardinal_malik: mv silent 20
cardinal_malik: climb 21
Ewan: Jon manages to slip over the wall and creep through the bushes and across the lawn. He reaches a side-door of the house without being spotted.
cardinal_malik: Jonathan searches the door for traps or locks.
cardinal_malik: Search 28
Ewan: It is locked, but you don't see any traps.
cardinal_malik: Jonathan attempts to bypass the lock
cardinal_malik: open lock 28
Ewan: You pop the lock just as you hear the sound of men approaching. You see the glow of a lantern getting stronger...
cardinal_malik: Jonathan quickly slips beyond the door.
cardinal_malik: Jonathan closes and relocks the door
Ewan: Jon is standing in a dark hallway- it is nearly pitch black in here.
cardinal_malik: Jonathan breaks the lock and his picks in the door (nat 1)
cardinal_malik: Jonathan snaps off the remaining pick
cardinal_malik: disable device 17
Ewan: Jon hears a voice from just beyond the door. ''Hey- I heard something.''
Ewan: The handle jiggles....
cardinal_malik: Jonathan moves swiftly towards Miss Evie's bedroom
Ewan: A muffled voice ''It's locked.''
cardinal_malik: search 29
Ewan: Looking through the darkened back halls, moving by touch and memory, you find the narrow servants' stairwell that leads up to the second storey where Evie's room is located.
cardinal_malik: Jonathan moves silently, clinging to the shadows as he approaches the room
Ewan: As you approach her room, you spot a man with an oil lamp, near the door. He's dressed in studded leather and wears a sword at his belt.
cardinal_malik: mv silent 31
cardinal_malik: hide 18
Ewan: You get into the hall without making any noise- but the man spots you coming down the hall. He raises his lantern. You can see a hawk-brand on his forehead.
Ewan: ''Who are you Why are you up here?'
cardinal_malik: "Sir Guard, I was told to come bring you news from the jail. About the murderer elf."
Ewan: ''Elf? Vas is diss?""
cardinal_malik: Jon approaches the guard.
Ewan: His accent doesn't sound local.
cardinal_malik: "There was trouble downstairs. Mister Denys needs the guards informed."
cardinal_malik: Jonathan gets closer to the guard.
cardinal_malik: Bluff 25
Ewan: ''Oh, gut.''
Ewan: The man relaxes, letting down his guard.
Ewan: He bends to set the lantern on the floor.
cardinal_malik: Jonathan takes the opportunity to slice the man's throat, holding him so he can't flail or make noise.
cardinal_malik: Attack roll 19
cardinal_malik: confirm vs. ac 17
Ewan: -confirmed-
cardinal_malik: 13 damage
Ewan: The knife opens his neck- he falls with a strangled gasp.
cardinal_malik: Jonathan moves the body out of the view of Evie's doorway
Ewan: Jon is able to drag the dying man a short distance down the hall.
cardinal_malik: Jonathan hides the body and then checks her door for locks or alarms
cardinal_malik: search 29
Ewan: After stuffing the dead man in a broom closet, you look over the door. You find no traps, but it is locked
cardinal_malik: Jonathan lightly taps the door. "Miss Evie? It’s Jonathan. I have a message from Sir Cirdan. I wanted to wait for an appropriate time."
Ewan: You can hear someone moving on the other side.
cardinal_malik: Jonathan lightly taps the door. "Miss Evie? It’s Jonathan. I have a message from Sir Cirdan. I wanted to wait for an appropriate time."
Ewan: After two or three minutes, the lock clicks and the door opens.
Ewan: Miss Evie stands before you in a thin nightgown with a gray wool shawl over her shoulders. Her lovely face is marked with the tracks of tears and her luxuriant red hair hangs loose.
Ewan: ''Jon?"'
cardinal_malik: Without waiting, Jonathan punches his knife into the throat of the woman.
cardinal_malik: nat 20
Ewan: confirmed
cardinal_malik: confirm vs. ac 17
Ewan: yup
cardinal_malik: 11 damage
Ewan: Evie is taken completely by surprise.
Ewan: She reaches for the knife stuck in her throat. Blood wells from her mouth.
Ewan: She staggers backwards into her room.
cardinal_malik: "See Cirdan? You unquiet tormentor! I keep my promises!"
Ewan: WEASEL BOY- FEEL THE FEAR!
Ewan: You feel a wave of stark terror wash over you- the stolen dread of your numerous victims!
Ewan: You can hear someone screaming.
Ewan: It is you!

"Your many victims"

That I did not see coming. Perhaps we've been looking for the wrong guy.
"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

Bought her from the Arkandalers.

Arkandale has both slavery and indentured servitude in my version of the setting. This not based on race, per se, although dark skin is often associated with servile status in Arkandale. This is because 'primitives' of Rashemi and Valachani stock are used by the wealthier class of Arkandalers as slaves.
There's also Sourangien/Voodan strain among the slave population...
