Dragon #323: See No Evil article

Post by BlackBoxGamer »

I just recently picked up a copy of this Dragon and came across this article with its alternate Detect spells and was thinking of trying to integrate it into my campaign. I was curious if anyone on these boards have done so, and if so, how well did it go for your campaign?:?:

For those of you who don't know the article that I am referring to, See No Evil introduces 4 new Detect spells as alternatives to Detect Good/Evil/Chaos/Law. They are:

* Detect Attitude (Tell if someone is Friendly, Indifferent, Unfriendly or Hostile)
* Detect Guilt (as it says)
* Detect Heresy (a tricky Detect spell that only works on followers, both false and true, of your religion).
* Detect Violence (as it says).

Those aren't bad, but in a way they are even worse than alignment detection.
Hostility, for example, is an even greater tell than just plain evil.

Detect guilt is a bad one too, though I think it would lead to some wonderful moments - such as the players investigating a murder, and passing over a guiltless man - when in fact the man is insane, and it was a dormant personality that commited the killing.

Well does it say that Detect Guilt detirmines guilt in realtion to a specific crime, or simply in general? For instance, expanding on ScS' example, would the PCs then get a positive reading if they scanned the next door neighbor, who's been stealing from his employer, even if his crime is in no way related to what they're investigating?

Furthermore, what if it scans for feelings of guilt rather than actual guilt? Would a sociopath, someone incapable of such an emotion, be immune? Would someone who felt their neglectful behavior killed their mother, even though it was in no way their fault, set the detection off?
