Darklords

Post by Dromaeosaurus »

I posted this on the Wizards boards, but traffic seems heavier here. I'm running Root of Evil and modified it so the players could encounter all of the darklords on the way to the final confrontation at Castle Ravenloft. I have Gazetteers I-IV and SotDR, which means I need CR and character levels or HD and templates for:

Morgoroth of Avonleigh
Yagno Petrovna of G'Henna
Elena Faith-hold of Nidala
Maligno of Odiare
Sodo of Paridon
Shinpi Haki of Rokushima Taiyoo
Ladislav Mircea of Sanguinia
Tiyet of Sebua
Ebonbane of Shadowborn Manor
Anton Misroi of Souragne
The Hive Queen of Timor

I've ordered Gazetteer V, but could you pass along Gwydion's CR so I can develop treasure and XP in advance too. I know this sounds crazy, but the players are high level, the gods are punishing them, the darklords are all free and don't want to go back, plus when the conjunction ends, they'll all go back safe and sound to their domains while the players will be in the material plane on their way to epic adventures. This is sort of their big budget final episode of Ravenloft before they move on to the spin-off fighting outsiders across the outer planes.

Gwydion has a CR of 40 and 648 hp, DR 25/Magic and Fast Healing 10!

Weird thing is, he has no attack bonus, no movement, no AC, etc, because he is trapped. He has a lot of spells though (all with DCs mostly in the low 20s), and they all have a range equal to the borders of the shadow rift. He can control all undead in the realm, and has a load of other powers.

If a party could physically get to him, alone, armed with magic weapons and heavily fortified with magic, they should be able to dispose of him at high levels.

I have read on LJ and My Space of solo combats that led to Gwydion's defeat, but that was mostly the result of being spawny than using power.

Still, a Wish would also be useful, if only to have a 50 thick concrete wall appear at the entrance to the Obsidian Gate, lol ;)

Gwydion's save DCs and other stuff should be drastically increased if he's ever freed from the Obsidian Gate. What you've got in Gaz V is relatively powerless Gwydion. Diet Gwydion. Not full strength Gwydion.

And Sodo and the Hive Queen are in Shadow of the Knife, at kargatane.com.

I've thought of inserting Gwydion in another campaign of mine, were some elves have opened a gate to the plane of shadows... (Not that I'd copy so much from RL; that story is a major story arc in Dave Arneson's Blackmoor...)

At the end, the party's supposed to face a terrible demon emerging from the gate... So I am interested if anyone already faced Gwydion and won... I'll search LJ and MySpace then, to see who dares to say he's really beaten that critter...

To reply to the original question with something other than speculation about Gwydion, stats for Sodo of Paridon and The Hive Queen of Timor can both be found in the adventure Shadow of the Knife, which you can download from the old Kargatane site (http://www.kargatane.com/).

I seem to recall running across 3rd ed. stats for Elena in some netbook somewhere, but I might just be making that up; in any case, you're probably best off designing your own high-level blackguard to be her. I'm pretty sure none of the others have 3rd (or 3.5) edition stats anywhere, so you'll have to make those up, as well. Ebonbane's something like an animated +4 flaming vorpal longsword, IIRC.

I defeated Gwydion singlehandedly in The Prince of Shadows adventure (2E) using a 8th level wizard (lol), but that was an even more diluted version of him that had you battling only little bits of him that escaped the gate.

As for stats for darklords not already updated, their was a netbook about a few years ago that had to be taken offline when it was brought to WotC's attention. Never seen another one like that since.

 Was this because the adventure had planned it or because you were the almighty Wiccy? :) I mean, Gwydion has challenge rating 40, so five or six 8 level characters should be able to handle him as described in Gaz V... No, really...

As I said, it was in 2E, so it was following the 2nd Edition version of Gwydion that was presented at the end of the Prince of Shadows adventure in the Shadow Rift accessory. You fought things like his tentacle, withering eye, fist, hoof, etc... it was pretty silly and very easy to defeat, even if the rest of the party were nor laying unconcsious at the bottom of the stairway leading up to the Gate after it collapsed under them. Aaaaahhhh... the wonders of a ring of levitation, heheheh.

Plus, the battle was made easier by the fact I had a few magic missiles and a fireball to back me up. I think I may have had another firebal on a scroll, not sure.

After playing that adventure, I beefed it up a bit when I DM'd it  11 characters of 8th to 10th level struggled against him then, MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

All that battle (it lasted nearly the entire 8 hour session!) and the favourite moment of the adventure for most of them was aiding some shadow fey repair a broken bridge, typical...

So the free Gwydion has CR 40 or the trapped one?

To Wiccy: HA! Each of my tentacles has a CR 10! 8)

Well, hee's what I would have...

Morgoroth of Avonleigh: A high level wizard Rank 3 ghost

Yagno Petrovna of G'Henna: Cleric level 12

Elena Faith-hold of Nidala: Expaladin 5/Blackguard 10

Maligno of Odiare: Carrionet Rogue 5

Shinpi Haki of Rokushima Taiyoo: Gheist fighter 12

Ladislav Mircea of Sanguinia: Old Vrykolaka Aristocat 2/Expert 3 with the ability to create alchemical formula as if he had all the prerequisits.

Tiyet of Sebua: Rank 3 Ancient dead Rogue 8

Anton Misroi of Souragne: Zombie lord Aristocrat 8/Adept 2 with the ability to cast spells as a 6th level druid.

Thats what I think anyway.

Maligno wouldn't be that high. I'd say a Rog2 or a Ftr1.

I think Hrtofdrkness has most of what I would recommend, but I'd give Antoine Misroi a lot more spellcasting capability. In Domains of Dread he could sling any necromantic spell as an 18th level wizard, at will. Any time he pleased. You could just say he can do that in 3e, or I suppose you could kit him out as an 18th level sorcerer with lots of necromancy spells.

I think I would give Elena more levels of (ex) paladin and fewer of blackguard, just because she had such a long history fighting evil on her own world, but that's a picayune point.
